For many of us, the office chair has become an extension of the body. From your home to your work office, the four-legged piece of furniture that houses your bottom as your fingers patter a keyboard is almost as important as the type of computer you buy. Just as it’s important to sleep in a supportive bed, buying the correct office chair is imperative.
Spinella, a company based in the United Kingdom, is trying to change the way we sit at the computer. The Spinella chair is the latest in luxury office chairs and is built with proper support in mind. Designed by relaxation therapist Sanne Buhl, the chair is manufactured in Denmark and distributed throughout the U.K.
Unlike traditional office chairs, the Spinella enables freedom of movement, with both big backward tilt and independent seat tilt, the company says. The spine-shaped back of the seat provides adjustable lumbar support and features “TechnoGel” (also used in breast implants) to even out pressure points and ensure comfort.
As for your bottom, the seat is 30 cm deep and designed to relieve pressure on the back of your thighs’ nerves and blood vessels. The result, according to Spinella, eliminates back pain.
The company says it is not interested in designing comfortable chairs, but the correct chair.
“Human beings were not designed to sit down, sitting is unnatural and you can’t blame the back for grumbling if we do it for long periods of time… You need “active” seating where you are free to move position,” the website says.
Of course, adults aren’t the only people spending hours upon the computer. Between in-school activities, Facebook and YouTube, children and young teens are spending an increasing amount of time sitting in front of the computer. The Spinella Tweeny is similar in design to its older counterpart but is more interested in prevention than support and relief. The chair claims to prevent onset later in life for kids aged eight and upwards who regularly sit at the computer.
The Spinella aims to not only promote relaxation, but proper sitting and the website states that the chair actually helps improve your posture.
